Mexican modernist sculpture
Carved wood modernist sculpture by Mexican modernist artist Guillermo Toussaint.
Guillermo Toussaint, (1892-1965), is a listed artist known for modernist figurative sculpture.
This work is carved wood, with areas of paint. It depicts a young female with a cloth head wrap. The work is titled ‘Totonaca’ young Totonac woman. The Totonac people resided in the eastern coastal and mountainous regions of Mexico at the time of the Spanish arrival in 1519. They now reside in Veracruz, Puebla, and Hidalgo.
This sculpture is signed ‘G’ ’58 on the lower portion, and bears a label with the artist’s name and the title.
Measures 12″ x 7″ x 6″
Some wear and loss to paint. Crack in back consistent with age.
